The Digital Nomads phenomena.

by Basheer Badran

With more of us working remotely even as restrictions begin to ease in some countries, the thought of swapping the sofa for a sandy beach is becoming increasingly appealing.

What is a digital Nomad ?

Digital nomad — An individual who uses technology to perform their work duties, enabling them to pursue a location-independent lifestyle.

Digital nomads are a small, but growing subset of the location-independent crowd.  Thanks to the rise of the internet and related technologies, digital nomads are able to live as travelers, moving as often as they wish while still being able to perform income-producing work.

A Youtube Phenomena

The first time I discovered this concept was in my YouTube feed, where I found about Chris or Chris the Freelancer, as he calls himself. He left his country Australia to work as a remote freelance web developer in many exotic places like Bali, Chiang Mai, Canggu…

In Nomads youtube channels you can find thousands of videos showcasing their lifestyle and the different ways they make money.

These videos are an addiction especially if you are interested in tropical places because most digital nomads are hopping between different cities in southeast Asia.

The Digital Nomads’ phenomena revolve around saving money so that they can afford to live and work in a foreign country, thus most of these nomads try to use co-working spaces , and low-budget hostels.

Jobs that are common amongst digital nomads include:

  • Project Manager
  • Social Media Manager
  • Graphic Designer
  • Copywriter
  • Virtual Assistant
  • Programmer
  • SEO Specialist
  • Life Coach
  • Digital Entrepreneur

Is the ‘Digital Nomad’ Life as Good as It Sounds?

Although this lifestyle sounds dreamy in theory — traveling the world full-time as a digital nomad and balancing work and play. Nonetheless, It can be absolutely exhausting. And that’s something people don’t talk about much. The fears you have to overcome on your path to living your wildest dreams.

These are some of the questions you have to keep in mind:

  • “What if you run out of money?”
  • “How is your life going to look?”
  • “How will you maintain all your friendships and relationships with people back home?”
  • “What if you get severely hurt?”

and many more challenges and obstacles that you can not predict while traveling away from your country.

Nevertheless, The Digital Nomads phenomena have changed the concept of tourism and co-working in many counties across the world.

Summary

Location-independent careers are not for everyone, and like everything in life it has its ups and downs. However, If you can work online and love traveling and discovering the world you should give it a try at least once because:

“The greatest risk is living a riskless life.”
